SmartMusic and How we use it at SHS

10/10/2014

Good Morning Everyone,

I wanted to supply some information about SmartMusic in an effort to get more students to submit their required assignments by the end of next week Friday October 17th, 2014.  The final day that I am accepting late work for the 1st quarter will be Friday October 17th, so I want to make sure that students complete any missing work.

Remember,  YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SUBMIT YOUR MEMORY TESTS BEFORE OCTOBER 17TH.  All students have 4 memory tests to submit via the SmartMusic program
1) The Star Spangled Banner
2) SHS Fight Song
3) Grenade - Bruno Mars
4) Locked out of Heaven - Bruno Mars

Students are more than welcome to come in before and after school to receive extra time working with the SmartMusic software to submit these assignments by the listed due date.  Please be aware, that if you do not submit them by next Friday, you will receive a 0 for all of the assignments and any standards that are linked to them.  These assignments can not be made up for late work as our final game is next Saturday, which coincides with the end of the first quarter.

Parents, here is some Information about SmartMusic that might be helpful:
This is directly from their website www.SmartMusic.com

SmartMusic is the award winning software used by music educators around the world to enhance their programs and provides a way to dramatically improve their students’ skills. Student practice is focused because they receive immediate feedback while listening to their performance and seeing the correct and incorrect rhythms and pitches onscreen. It also allows the teacher to provide students with the individual instruction and customized feedback needed to get better faster. Students are also able to hear their part in context with SmartMusic’s professional background accompaniment, giving them a pitch and rhythmic reference when practicing at home.

SmartMusic is purchased as an annual subscription, which gives your student access to the largest digital sheet music library with accompaniment in the world. Subscribers sign up for classes designed by their teachers, and receive practice materials tailored to their specific needs. This allows students to receive the individualized instruction necessary to improve at a faster pace.

Information about How we use SmartMusic in class:

All students have a designated time, during 7th hour concert band, to practice and submit assignments using the SmartMusic software.  Our 3 practice rooms have been outfitted with SmartMusic work stations, so 3 students are able to work with the software at one time.  Because of this, I have had to create a schedule for students to receive weekly sessions using the program.  Each student has at least 20 minutes every week to use the program, which gives them enough time to log in, and submit assignments. This 20 minutes can be used in two ways: it can act as a practice session for students to work on required assignments, or it can be a time to submit an assignment.  Since students get immediate feedback with this program, they are able to practice until they receive the grade that they want to submit.  However, if students do not come prepared for their SmartMusic time, they will spend too much time practicing (which should be done at home), and not enough time submitting assignments.

SmartMusic at Home

As students continue to work with this program, they are realizing not only how fun it is, but how effective it can be as a second teacher.  Students are also beginning to realize that they would like more time with the program.  Since I can only give them 20 minutes a week, students either need to come in before, after, or sometimes during the school day to receive extra SmartMusic time.  However, students are able to purchase this program for home use, which can be very beneficial.

I highly recommend that students purchase this software for home use because they will be able to practice with the program and be able to submit assignments at their own leisure.  While it is a yearly subscription, the price is incredibly reasonable given all of the features it contains.  A one year subscription to SmartMusic is only $40 and can be purchased by visiting this website:

I hope this will help clarify some things regarding the SmartMusic software and how we are using it in class, especially since we will be using it all year.  Please make sure that all students submit their playing tests by Friday October 17th.

As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.  Hope to see everyone at the game tonight.

Go Sabres!
